Solar biomass electric hybrid dryer

Application/uses: 

In North Eastern States of India, where ginger/ turmeric production is very high or electric power supply is intermittent.

Salient Technical Competing Features: 
  • Utilization of renewable sources of energy like solar and biomass for drying purposes;
  • Heating system backup using biomass and electrical heaters for uninterrupted service during rainy season and also during night;
  • Controlled atmosphere drying through selection of the drying parameters such as moisture content, air temperature and air flow rate;
  • Better-quality product by adequate drying which helps to preserve the flavour, texture, and colour of the food;
  • Reduction in electrical energy consumption (~ 4 kWh) as compared to the conventional dryers (~ 25 kWh) for 50 kg/batch dryer capacity.

Techno Economic:  Price of 50kg raw ginger is Rs. 1,500/-, Processing Cost is Rs. 590/-, 10 kg dried ginger is produced from 50 kg raw ginger. If market price for dried organic ginger flake/ kg is Rs 280/-, then profit per day is Rs. 710/-.
